Be warned that depending on where you are on that day/time you may be participating even if you didn't plan to. Our local library will be doing a disaster drill in honor of the SHAKE OUT!
We are going to pretend that a 7.8 earthquake hits the southern portion of the San Andreas Fault. "Stop, Drop, and Hold On"
I first heard about this from Nancy, a local hs'r, who will be doing a presentation that day on Earthquake preparedness.
More recently, I sat through a professional development presentation at the Discovery Science Center presented by someone from shakeout.org
I was fascinated. The graphics (below) of how the area would shake if that magnitude hit in at that spot. How some areas would continue to shake long after others.
The video is 8 minutes long the part that so impacted me starts at 3:34
It really made me think about all the places we frequent during the course of a week. It really isn't just about our home being safe. It is about how safe are we in all the places that we go. It is about thinking of being prepared while we are on the road. I had not taken those things into account until after watching the video for the 2nd or 3rd time.
Isn't this a cool logo? Click on it to go learn more about Drop! Cover! Hold On! I didn't know about the Hold On! part of the equation. Did you?

Spend some time looking and listening to the downloads at shakeout.org too many interesting things to list.
Lastly, you all know about the USGS website, right? The one with real time earthquake information and updates. The one where each and every one of us can participate in the data collection process by filling out a form for the earthquakes we feel.
This is my first stop after the earth stops moving and the family/home is secure.
